BFT welding and fabrication work on an existing gate in San Francisco typically runs $350 – $1,200 depending on whether we’re repairing a cracked weld, rebuilding a hinge mount, or fabricating a replacement bracket. We carry BFT-compatible steel and aluminum stock on our trucks, and we can handle most weld repairs same-day once we see the damage. The way owners usually find us: a gate that suddenly sags, a hinge that’s torn free from the post, or a weld that’s been quietly cracking for months and finally lets go in the middle of a workday.

What matters to us isn’t just that the weld holds. It’s that the gate swings true afterward, latches without fighting, and doesn’t scrape the driveway every time the wind pushes it. And when we’re done, your floors look the way they did before we walked in.
Which BFT Models This Applies To
Most of the weld work we do on BFT gates involves the swing-arm brackets, hinge plates, and motor mounting posts on BFT Deimos, Phobos, and Ares series swing operators. Sliding gate owners call us for track repairs and for the steel guide brackets that keep a BFT sliding gate from wobbling as it travels. The common thread is simple: the hinges or mounting plates are the places where metal flexes the most, and in San Francisco’s damp marine air, those are the first spots to fatigue or corrode.
If you’re not sure which BFT model you have, check the white label on the underside of the operator cover. It’ll list the model name and sometimes the serial. But for welding purposes, the model matters less than the metal we’re attaching to. A steel post and a wrought-iron gate weld differently than an aluminum frame, and we’ll match the filler rod and heat to what’s actually there. One gotcha we run into often: some BFT mounting plates are powder-coated aluminum, and you can’t weld aluminum plate to a galvanized steel post without a bimetallic isolator. If you skip that step, the joint corrodes from the inside and fails again in two years. That’s the kind of detail we catch on the first visit instead of the second.

Signs Your BFT Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- The gate sags toward the latch side. Usually the lower hinge weld is cracking or the hinge plate has stretched. The gate still opens, but every cycle is pulling the crack wider.
- A grinding or creaking noise when the gate moves. Often it’s a broken weld inside a hinge barrel, so the pin rides metal-on-metal instead of on a smooth bearing surface.
- The gate won’t close all the way or the latch no longer lines up. A shifted hinge plate from a cracked weld changes the geometry just enough that the latch misses the post.
- Visible rust bleeding from the base of a post or hinge plate. In San Francisco, fog and salt air work on exposed steel every night. If you see rust staining, the metal underneath is thinner than it looks.
- The BFT operator is working harder than it used to. When a hinge weld shifts, friction goes up, and the motor draws more current. That’s a sign the gate is fighting itself, and the operator usually loses that fight.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what we typically see in San Francisco:
- Small weld repair (cracked bracket, loose hinge plate): $180 – $350, including prep, weld, and finish coating.
- Hinge replacement or rebuild (one gate leaf): $250 – $500, including new hinge hardware matched to the existing metal.
- Custom bracket or mounting plate fabrication: $300 – $800, depending on steel vs. aluminum and how much we’re building from scratch.
- Post repair or reinforcement (cracked or rotted steel post at the base): $400 – $1,200, including concrete work if the post needs re-seating.
You’ll see the exact number in writing before we touch anything. That’s not a courtesy; it’s how we work. No invoice that’s higher than the quote, ever. And the welded repair is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the fix isn’t right, we make it right, no argument.

DIY or Call Us?
If you want to check anything yourself, look at the hinge welds and mounting plates in daylight. Run your hand along the joint, look for hairline cracks that follow the edge of the weld, and note any rust bleeding. That’s a reasonable owner inspection.
What you shouldn’t do is fire up a welder on a gate that’s under tension. A gate that’s sagging is storing mechanical load somewhere, and if you cut or weld the wrong spot, that energy releases fast. We also see owners weld over cracked metal without grinding out the old weld first, which just hides the problem under a fresh bead. And welding on a gate with a live BFT operator connected means you’re working near line voltage unless the power is fully isolated. This is one of those jobs where the hospital bill costs more than our quote. Call (628) 227-2771 and we’ll come look at it.
FAQs
A properly prepped and welded steel hinge or bracket repair typically lasts 10 – 20 years, with the outer coating being the variable; near the ocean or in the fog belt, we recommend touching up the coating every two to three years to keep salt air off the metal, and that’s a 15-minute job you can do yourself. Call (628) 227-2771 if you’d like us to check an existing repair that’s starting to rust.
Most cracked welds on BFT hinge plates and brackets can be repaired by grinding out the old weld, re-welding with the correct filler, and re-coating the joint; the exception is when the surrounding metal itself is cracked or stretched, which usually means replacement. We’ll show you which situation you have before we quote the work.
A straightforward single-hinge weld repair takes about one to two hours on site, including setup and coating; a custom bracket fabrication may take one to three days depending on what we’re building and whether it needs to be powder-coated to match. You’ll know the timeline before we start.
We stock common steel and aluminum hinge plates, mounting brackets, and filler rod on our trucks for most BFT swing and slide gate repairs; odd-size or model-specific castings are typically available within one to three business days from our local suppliers. Call (628) 227-2771 and we’ll tell you what we can match from the truck before we even schedule the visit.
